Manufacturing USA

Sixteen different manufacturing innovation institutes across the nation comprise Manufacturing USA. These institutes are public-private partnerships that each have distinct technology focus areas but work towards a common goal: To accelerate U.S. advanced manufacturing as a whole and secure America’s future through manufacturing innovation, education and collaboration.

As nodes in the network, Manufacturing USA institutes complement each other’s capabilities and benefit from shared approaches to matters such as intellectual property, contract research and performance metrics. Each provides shared facilities to local start-ups and small manufacturers to help them scale up new technologies, accelerate technology transfer to the marketplace, and facilitate the adoption of innovation workforce skills. The network is designed to foster innovation and deliver new capabilities that can stimulate the manufacturing sector on a large scale.

The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)—a national network of hundreds of organizations like the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center and the other MEP centers in all 50 states—is playing a role in moving the institute’s newly developed technologies into the small companies that comprise the bulk of the U.S. manufacturing base.

LIFT (Lightweight Innovations For Tomorrow)
Detroit, MI
The Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center has developed core technology capabilities in support of LIFT. LIFT is working to develop and deploy advanced lightweight materials manufacturing technologies including aluminum, magnesium, titanium and advanced high-strength steel alloys. An equally important mission is to facilitate the training of the workers who will use these new processes in factories and maintenance across the nation.

The Center is Here to Help You!

The Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center has assembled a team of leading experts in Joining, Metallurgy, Castings and Coatings to assist small to mid-size manufacturers across the United States in engineering design and material selection and to assist in the adoption in new lightweight technologies.  In addition, the Center operates a Technical Help Desk and administers a library of technological journals, periodicals and other authoritative content.
